Improving Nurses’ Capacity in Providing Mental-Health Education Sessions and Increasing Community Awareness: Development of a  Mental Wellness Education Package to Support Women with Cancer

 

This project aims to create a comprehensive 

Mental Health Education Package comprising a 

Mental Wellness Handbook for women with cancer and their family caregivers and a Training Manual for nurses who will provide health education related to mental health for this group. This package will provide information on mental wellness, recommended coping strategies, and family support for both women with cancer and their family caregivers. The educational package will be designed to be accessible to a broad range of women to help them navigate the treatment period and return to normal-life successfully.

 

The project will be implemented in 04 hospitals across Vietnam, where women with cancer receive medical care, including Hue Central Hospital, University of Medicine & Pharmacy HCMC Hospital, Hanoi Medical University Hospital and Vinmec Times City International Hospital.

 

This project is supported by the Australian Government through the Australian Alumni Grants Fund.

 

This project consists of 3 phases (see summary graph below)

Phase 1

Phase 1 will be conducted with a survey to explore their mental health status, coping strategies, and support needs of women with cancer. In addition, a group of family caregivers will also be surveyed to assess their awareness and knowledge of mental health issues among women with cancer and support needs.

Phase 2

In Phase 2, the Mental Wellness Education Package will be developed by a group of experts in healthcare field.The package will consist of:

 

1) A Mental Health Handbook for women and family caregivers

 

2) A Training Manual for oncology nurses on providing mental health education sessions for women with cancer and their family caregivers

Phase 3

Train for Trainer (TOT) sessions will be provided to nurses at selected hospitals to build their knowledge and skills in delivering mental health education for women with cancer and their family caregivers. Then, health education sessions for this targeted groups will be provided by nurses who participated in TOT. Pre- and post-surveys will be conducted to assess nurses’, women’s, and family members’ improvements in knowledge and awareness.

Phase 1

Identify common symptoms among women after cancer treatment in Vietnam.

Phase 2

A 12-week cancer management program will be delivered via a smart app named i-CanManage (internet-based Cancer Management), which promotes wellness among women after cancer treatment through exercise and general information related to common symptom management.

Phase 3

A pilot randomized controlled trial will be conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the cancer management program as well as the usability and transferability of the smart app.
